PRNC Board Members Becky Leveque and Sue Hammarlund spent Friday, January 8 walking Northridge Middle School and Sunny Brae Elementary to see how the preparations were coming along for our students to go back to school on Tuesday, after getting to visit the campuses on Monday. This is Sue’s report:

The school relocation is an amazing thing to see.  Due to my 38 years of teaching in LAUSD, I was a little apprehensive about how the transfer would work out.

We were amazed at how fast and well the transistion has occurred.  Space for both schools was carved out of existing campuses.  The classrooms which are all new and shiny looked great.  The kids will come to school and find their own desk just how it was left, bright and shiny.

When you send your child to the new schools tell them that this is an exciting adventure that they can tell their other friends about.  They are involved in a unique experience.  It could almost be called the Miracle of Porter Ranch.  Out of the mess we have experienced, this is a glowing light.

A bi-partisan team of four California State Senators announced at a press conference today that they will be introducing legislation in the next week to ensure that a leak like the Aliso Canyon gas leak will never happen again.

PRNC President Paula Cracium spoke at the conference. She hopes that this legislation will make a significant difference to the safety of communities that are right next door to these types of facilities. “Not having testing and not knowing when a leak happens is something that can’t happen in the future. We need to know when a leak happens instantly, not just when someone happens to walk past on a random test.” She further emphasized, “Everything has to be on the table, from shutting it down to making it safe.”

PRNC Board Member Alex Kim also spoke at the conference and many other board members were on hand.

At this Saturday’s AQMD Hearing, the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council was ably represented by Board Member Becky Leveque who described the gas leak as “a devastating blow to our tight knit community.” She spoke of the huge emotional adjustment from having to move out of our homes and applauded the efforts of Food and Water Watch and Save Porter Ranch. “We just want our community back with assurance we live in a safe place,” she emphasized. She outlined a list of next steps including infrared camera monitoring, better leak detection, identifying the right level of gas pressure for the fields to operate safely, and determining whether the new compressors should be put on hold.

Board Member Cheri Derohanian also testified regarding the unacceptable delay between the identification of the leak and notification to the school.

After a thorough review of the current situation in Aliso Canyon, its potential effect on the community of Porter Ranch, the current economics of oil production and after discussions with the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council and local decision makers, The Termo Company (Termo) has decided to postpone the release of the Public Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the North Aliso Canyon Project.Termo intends to resume the process sometime in the future as we recognize the fact that this is not the ideal time to move forward with the Porter Ranch community fully focused on more immediate issues. We look forward to that time when Termo can fully re-engage with the community on the DEIR in a process that allows for full and focused involvement of the residents, stakeholders, and governmental agencies.
